14 lb walleye caught in the Garrison Dam tailrace

Craig Thornby of Churches Ferry, ND caught this 14 pound walleye in the Garrison Dam Tailrace on September 24, 2005.

Below are several photos of the Garrison Dam Tailrace. Notice the boats. In the water big white pelicans await a free meal. Seagulls hover in the air waiting for a morsel missed by the pelicans. Cormorants are resting on the wing walls. In the winter, after the lakes freeze up, this area is populated with canada geese. Bald eagles use it as a wintering area where they catch fish in the open water. They were not there the day this picture was taken but many times fishermen are seen on the wing walls. These photos were taken in early September - notice the leaves just starting to turn color; in a couple more weeks they will be in full fall foliage and will make for some great photos.
